The Awesome PostgreSQL 9.4 JSONB Data Type
As described on the PostgreSQL 9.4 New Features Wiki Page, the new JSONB data type for PostgreSQL means developers no longer have to choose between relational and non-relational data stores: they can have both at the same time. Several examples of using JSON operations in combination with standard PostgreSQL aggregates and other query operations.
Now Watching HBO Go on Roku
I’m amazed I haven’t seen this across the web, so you might be hearing it for the first time here that Comcast Xfinity customers like myself can now watch HBO Go on Roku, as well as Showtime Anytime. That’s a pretty big deal. Finally.
Unsettings for Unity
I’m a Ubuntu Tweak Man myself, but if you want to try an alternative GUI for changing your Unity desktop settings you might want to check out Unsettings.
The No-Impact Running Bike
The ElliptoGO is a no-impact combination elliptic machine and bike which looks like a great way to cross train and improve running performance. Link to video of runners who use and love it.
Derby’s New 3D Printed Legs
Our Feel Good link of the day, this is a story of a disabled dog named Derby who can now run thanks to his new 3D Printed Legs. Interesting videos covering the attempts to help Derby become mobile before the seeming miracle of 3D printed legs was applied to his deformed front legs.
Innovations of 2014
Overview of technological innovations from 2014 from the Huffington Post in “Welcome To The Future: The 8 Most Game-Changing Innovations Of 2014”. Includes high-speed DNA sequencing, new applications of 3D Printing, drop-of-blood diagnosis and skin-based stem cells, drones, driverless cars and space probes, advances and controversies in Artificial Intelligence.
How To Motivate Developers
Good JAXenter article on what motivates developers, suggesting that autonomy, mastery and meaningful work often far outweigh money. Several good comments from developers, though I wish there were more of them.
This is a Tuts+ finale to their excellent WordPress Series for Developers. Here they serve up a list of 50 WordPress actions developers can hook into, complete with examples.
So THIS is ePaper on a Phone
I finally get the utility of having the back side of my phone serving as an ePaper reader. Instructive video on how the YotaPhone’s ePaper functions resulting in power savings, always-on capabilities, readability and other improvements.
The Material Palette Generator
This is very slick for Android Developers. Select two colors and Material Palette will output PrimaryColor, Dark- and LightPrimaryColor, Text and other color HEX values. Can download as XML, CSS and other formats.
